Wow... this collection ended up being much greater than I imagined! Had to learn about Billy Joe Shaver, but what a character... there's the story: "Where do you want it?"

Billy Joe Shaver’s songs were stories of his life; they were real, and they were raw. Many artists have covered Billy Joe songs over the years: from Willie to Waylon, to Elvis and Cash. Billy Joe’s influence on some of the greatest of artists is what inspired this project. Now, with Live Forever: A Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver a whole new batch of artists and songwriters are taking their cut at one of the greatest songwriting catalogs of all time. This album is a testament to Billy Joe’s words and the deep impact they had on so many wonderful songwriters and performers. He’s a hero to so many, and New West is honored to pay homage to the legacy of Billy Joe Shaver. Just like the songs he left behind him, he’s gonna live forever now.

I played my first gig with Billy Joe when I was still in high school. He fell through my drums. That was the beginning of a long and lasting friendship.
I grew up around songwriters; the likes of Willie, Roger Miller, Hank Cochran, and Mickey Newbury. But Billy Joe opened a new door for me. He was one of a kind.
The early 70’s shed a light on a whole new breed of writers: Billy Joe, Guy Clark, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, J.D. Souther, Gram Parsons...you name it. But when I heard “Old Five And Dimers”, I knew right then that this guy was special. The honesty and simplicity were genius. Straight from the heart. Waylon heard his music and did a whole album of his songs: “Honky Tonk Heroes” became his breakout album.

If you knew Billy, you knew his faith was real. He was the traveling preacher that would kick your ass. As he wrote, “If you don’t love Jesus, go to hell.” I know he would be touched by all the incredible people who made this record possible. Just like the songs he left behind him, he’s gonna live forever now. - Freddy Fletcher

I am not really an expert in today's country music. I know and appreciate Sheryl Crow or the Dixie Chicks, but that's it more or less. NIKKI LANE's rocking style with a decent rough edge fits quite well to this "strong women" references. Several songs are catchy and always welcome on my soft music playlists, check for example "First High", "Born Tough" or "Black Widow". H.L.
